Under the esteemed patronage of the Presidency of the Republic of Iraq – Department of Women’s Affairs, the Arabkha Organization for Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Nesmat Ata’a Organization for Orphan Care, convened a high-level national seminar titled: “Together Against Human Trafficking: Towards a National Partnership for Protection and Justice.” The event, held at the Baghdad Palace, witnessed a significant diplomatic and official presence, including representatives from state institutions, international agencies, and civil society organizations.
The seminar commenced with an opening statement by the Chief of Staff of the Presidency, Mr. Yahya Al-Muhammadi, who emphasized the Presidency’s commitment to supporting civil society institutions and reinforcing their pivotal role in addressing critical humanitarian and human rights issues.
The Arabkha Organization’s Strategic Vision: In his keynote address, the President of the Arabkha Organization for Sustainable Development, Mr. Dashti Shwani, underscored that combating human trafficking is not merely a legal or security concern, but a fundamental human rights and developmental imperative essential for safeguarding human dignity. Mr. Shwani outlined the Organization’s comprehensive strategy based on the internationally recognized four-pillar framework: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, and Partnership. He reaffirmed the Organization’s commitment to translating this vision into actionable measures by empowering vulnerable groups, raising public awareness, and building robust synergies with state authorities and international partners.
Strengthening Protection and Access to Justice: The Director-General of the Department of Women’s Affairs at the Presidency, Ms. Hanaa Emmanuel, highlighted the vital role of national NGOs in augmenting governmental efforts. She stressed the importance of a victim-centered approach, focusing on the rehabilitation of survivors and ensuring their unhindered access to justice and essential services.
International Recognition: Representing the international community, the Deputy Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Mr. Bogdan Siliver, commended Iraq’s national progress in the fight against human trafficking, emphasizing the necessity of sustained coordination between local stakeholders and international organizations to address the evolving nature of this crime.
Dialogue and Recommendations: The seminar featured a specialized panel discussion that examined proactive prevention mechanisms and rapid response strategies. The event concluded with a consensus on the need for continued multi-sectoral coordination between the government, civil society, and diplomatic missions to foster a sustainable national partnership dedicated to eradicating human trafficking and upholding the principles of justice and protection.
